The Marks story is live on Dirt Talk.
Founder Tyler Marks sat down with Aaron Witt of BuildWitt for Episode 479, “A Skid Steer and a Craigslist Ad,” to talk about where it all started, the growth of Marks Clearing & Grading, and the people, lessons, and hard work behind the journey.
Tyler started this company at 18 with a skid steer and a Craigslist ad. What came after wasn’t a straight line.
In the episode, Tyler gets into why owning more equipment doesn’t automatically make a better business, how admitting what he didn’t know helped him earn trust, and why bringing in experienced leaders became necessary to take the company to the next level.
We think that’s the real lesson in this one. Tyler didn’t hold on to every decision just because he’d built the company from scratch. His willingness to hand real authority to people who knew more than he did about parts of this business is a large reason Marks is where it is today.
“A lot of people took a chance on me,” Tyler said.
It’s an hour well spent for anyone building something in this industry, and an honest look at what growth actually costs and what it actually takes.
