The groundwork for what comes next.
Marks prepares sites for the work ahead, from mass grading and excavation to the grades that support roads, utilities and future development.
Grading is where a site starts to take shape, and where a schedule is won or lost. Our crews perform large-scale excavation, mass earthwork, cut and fill, building pad preparation, roadway grading and fine grading, with the next phase of work already in mind.
Three scopes, one earthwork team
Every phase is self-performed, on the same site, by the same team, under the same schedule.
Cut and fill in balance
Excavators, dozers and articulated trucks move material in balance, so nobody pays to haul dirt the site will need later.
- Mass earthwork and cut and fill
- Topsoil stripped and stockpiled for reuse
- Design surfaces loaded to GPS-equipped machines
Large-scale excavation
High-production excavation for demanding schedules, with soft subgrade found early and fixed before it becomes a change order in the middle of paving.
- Mass excavation and loading for haul
- Undercut and stabilization
- Our own trucks keep the cut moving
Pads, roadways and fine grade
Building pads and road subgrade are cut to line and grade, proof rolled, held to design elevation and handed off ready to work.
- Building pad preparation
- Roadway grading and subgrade
- Fine grading for stone, curb, utilities or vertical construction
How a mass grading job runs
Six phases, planned before the first cut.
Model and Layout
Design surfaces are built and loaded to the machines before the first cut. What the engineer drew is what the blade follows.
Strip and Stockpile
Topsoil is stripped and stockpiled for reuse, keeping haul off down and respread simple at closeout.
Mass Cut and Fill
Material moves in balance across the site with excavators, dozers and our own articulated trucks.
Undercut and Stabilization
Soft subgrade is found early, undercut and stabilized before it can slow down paving.
Pads and Roadway
Pads and road subgrade are cut to line and grade, proof rolled and held to design elevation.
Fine Grade and Turnover
Final subgrade is dressed and handed to stone, curb, utilities or vertical construction ready to work.
Our fleet. Our trucks. Our schedule.
Trained on the system
GPS-equipped equipment is only as good as the person running it. Our operators know what the model is telling them, and when it is wrong. That is what keeps a large cut on grade and rework off the schedule.
Hauling we control
We run our own articulated trucks, road tractors and dump trailers. When a cut opens up, we are not waiting on a hauler to become available.
Prolec GE GT-400 Expansion
A major industrial expansion in Goldsboro, North Carolina, for owner GE Energy, delivered alongside BW Design Group. Marks self-performed the full sitework package.
Grading that sets up everything after it
Because the same company runs the next phase, grades are built for the utilities, roadways and pavement that follow.
Earthwork in production
Mass grading, excavation and site preparation on active Marks sites, including Magnolia Forest.
Grading & excavation FAQ
What grading and excavation services does Marks provide?
Mass excavation, cut and fill, building pads, roadway grading, fine grading, and undercut and stabilization, all self-performed by Marks crews across Greater Raleigh-Durham and throughout the Carolinas.
Does Marks use GPS machine control?
Yes. Every machine in the Marks grading fleet runs GPS machine control, and operators are trained extensively on the system before they run production work.
Does Marks haul its own material?
Yes. Marks runs its own articulated trucks, road tractors and dump trailers, so a mass grading schedule is not waiting on an outside hauler.
Can Marks handle utilities and paving on the same site?
Yes. Grading is coordinated with Marks utility, curb, stone and asphalt crews so each phase is turned over ready for the next one.
Where does Marks perform grading work?
Throughout Greater Raleigh-Durham and the Carolinas, from our headquarters in Wendell, North Carolina.
