Overview

The measure that saves a site is the one installed before the rain.

Erosion and sediment control is the first thing an inspector looks at and the last thing anyone wants to fix under pressure. Marks installs and maintains the erosion control package as part of the sitework scope, on the same schedule as the clearing and grading it protects.

Because our crews are already on the site, a measure that gets damaged on Tuesday is repaired on Tuesday.

The goal is not passing a single inspection. It is keeping the site workable through the wet weeks so grading, utilities and paving keep moving.

The Measures

What goes in, and when it goes in

Erosion control on a Marks job is scoped with the earthwork, not bolted on after it. Each measure is installed, inspected and maintained on the same schedule as the work it protects.

Before Disturbance

Silt Fence

Perimeter fence installed before land disturbance to hold sediment on site.

Day One

Construction Entrances

Stabilized stone entrances that keep mud off public roads.

Early Earthwork

Sediment Basins

Built to the approved design and to the drainage area actually feeding them.

Early Earthwork

Skimmers & Baffles

Skimmers draw cleaner water off the top while baffles slow the flow through the basin.

During Grading

Diversion Ditches

Runoff routed into the basins instead of across a fresh cut.

During Grading

Slope Drains

Water carried down new slopes without cutting into them.

As Slopes Finish

Matting & Seeding

Matting, seed and stabilization so soil stays where it was placed.

Utilities & Roads

Inlet Protection

Sediment kept out of the storm system as structures come online.

Through the Job

Erosion control that changes as the site does

When the grading plan changes, the erosion control plan changes with it, on the same site visit. Here is how the measures follow the work from first disturbance to closeout.

  1. 01

    Before Disturbance

    The perimeter goes in first.

    • Silt fence
    • Construction entrance
    • Perimeter measures
  2. 02

    Clearing & Mass Grading

Basins come online as the ground opens up.

    • Sediment basins
    • Skimmers & baffles
    • Diversion ditches
  3. 03

    Slopes & Pads

Fresh slopes protected as they are cut.

    • Slope drains
    • Matting
    • Temporary seeding
  4. 04

    Utilities & Roads

Structures protected as they come online.

    • Inlet protection
    • Stabilized work areas
  5. 05

    Closeout

The site is handed over stable.

    • Permanent stabilization
    • Measures removed

When the Weather Turns

The week you cannot afford to lose

Rain stops work. The repairs decide whether you restart on Monday or Thursday.

Before

Capacity ready

Basins are cleaned out before they lose capacity, because a full basin is the same as no basin.

After

Repairs by our crews

Damaged measures are repaired by the crews already on site, without waiting on a separate mobilization.

Back to Work

Stable and ready

The site is stabilized and ready for inspection so grading, utilities and paving can restart.

Featured Project

Rolesville Crossing

A 95-acre residential development for Lennar with 297 homesites, where the stormwater and erosion control scope included seven sediment control basins with baffles, risers, skimmers and emergency spillways, alongside more than 52,000 CY of pond excavation.

Questions

Erosion control FAQ

What erosion control measures does Marks install?

Silt fence, construction entrances, sediment basins with skimmer outlets and baffles, diversion ditches, slope drains, matting, inlet protection, and seeding and stabilization.

When do erosion control measures go in?

Perimeter measures go in before land disturbance starts. Basins, diversions and stabilization are added as clearing and grading progress, following the approved plan.

Who maintains the measures during construction?

The Marks crews running the job. Measures are inspected, cleaned out and repaired through the life of the project, then removed and the ground stabilized at closeout.

Can Marks build sediment basins to an approved design?

Yes. Sediment basins, skimmer outlets and baffles are built to the approved design and checked against the drainage area actually feeding them.

Does Marks work on NCDOT projects?

Yes. On the I-540 corridor, Marks maintained erosion control to NCDOT standards while preserving required buffers.

Where does Marks provide erosion control?

Throughout Greater Raleigh-Durham and the Carolinas, from our headquarters in Wendell, North Carolina.
