Overview

Clearing is where a schedule is won.

Clearing is the first work on a site and the phase that decides when everything else can start. Marks runs large-scale clearing operations with a fleet sized for tracts measured in acres, not a few lots at a time.

The whole operation is ours: the dozers, the grapples, the grinders, the trucks and the crews. Nothing about the opening phase of your project depends on a subcontractor deciding when to show up.

That is why clearing is the opening advantage of a turnkey package. We mobilize, we clear, and our grading crews are already moving in behind us.

The Fleet

Deep enough to move fast.

Large-scale clearing is a fleet problem before it is anything else. It takes enough machines, with the right attachments, available the week the job needs them. Ours are owned, not rented, so adding a machine on a hard week is a phone call, not a procurement exercise.

Horizontal Grinders

Timber is reduced where it stands, which cuts haul off and keeps loaded trucks off the road.

The Sequence

From standing timber to a workable site

Six steps, one company, one schedule. Every step is self-performed by Marks crews on Marks equipment.

  1. Mobilize

Machines are on the ground fast, because the fleet is ours and is not tied up waiting on somebody else to release it.

  2. Clear

Timber and brush come down across large tracts with dozers, root rakes, KG blades and grapple excavators working together.

  3. Grub

Stumps and root mat are pulled so the subgrade comes up clean, with nothing left in the fill to settle later.

  4. Process on Site

Horizontal grinders reduce material where it stands, which cuts haul off, cuts cost and keeps loaded trucks off the road.

  5. Haul and Dispose

What has to leave the site is loaded on our own dump trailers and road tractors instead of an outside hauler.

  6. Hand Off to Grading

The site is stripped and workable, and because the grading crews are ours too, they are already behind us.

In House

One company owns the whole clearing operation.

Marks self-performs 100 percent of the clearing operation. It is not brokered, not subbed out and not coordinated across three companies with three different calendars. Here is what that changes for your schedule.

I-540 Clearing & Earthwork

Brought on by Flatiron Dragados to clear and grub 120 acres along the future six-lane toll corridor from Rock Quarry Road to I-87/US 64/US 264. Our crews removed trees, stumps, brush and surface debris on varied terrain, preserved required buffers, maintained erosion control to NCDOT standards and kept pace with aggressive schedule milestones.

Turnkey Sitework

The opening advantage of a turnkey site

Clearing is the first phase of a Marks turnkey package. Every phase after it comes from the same company, so the handoffs are internal and nothing waits at a boundary.

Questions

Clearing & grubbing FAQ

What does clearing and grubbing include?

Clearing removes standing timber, brush and surface debris. Grubbing removes the stumps and root mat below grade so the subgrade comes up clean. Marks handles both, along with on-site grinding and haul off, as part of its sitework scope.

How large a site can Marks clear?

Marks regularly clears large tracts, including 120 acres along the I-540 corridor and 101 acres at Merritt Reserve. The fleet is sized for sites measured in acres, not a few lots at a time.

Does Marks subcontract its clearing?

No. Marks self-performs 100 percent of its clearing operation with its own equipment, operators and trucks.

What happens to the timber and debris?

Where it makes sense, horizontal grinders process material on site, which reduces haul off and truck traffic. What has to leave the site is hauled on Marks dump trailers and road tractors.

Can grading start right after clearing?

Yes. Clearing, grading, utilities and paving all come from the same company, so Marks grading crews move in behind the clearing without waiting on a separate contractor.

Where does Marks perform land clearing?

Throughout Greater Raleigh-Durham and the Carolinas, from our headquarters in Wendell, North Carolina.
